Supporting the Future: Dr. Ben Gitterman

Dr. Ben GittermanNew to the D.C. area in the mid-'90s, Dr. Ben Gitterman, a practicing pediatrician, spent a week getting to know the city. During that time, he was invited to visit Food & Friends following his involvement in the first Washington, D.C.-to-Philadelphia AIDSRide, a 3-day fundraising bicycle trip.

"I was so impressed with the concept, and the commitment," Ben recalls. "I researched the organization. And I was pretty sold on it, so to speak. My instincts have proved correct over the years." Since then, Ben has been a proud donor to the organization.

"I continue to contribute because I see the organization as successful, rather than a drop in the bucket," he says. "Knowing that a program is out there that is carefully nutritionally planned and personalized, and truly community-based, in and of itself, is superb."

Ben is also impressed by the commitment of the staff and the management, noting that "Food & Friends is both present AND future oriented, and the evolution to deal with increasingly diverse health conditions…is also important."

Providing a legacy gift to Food & Friends seemed like a natural progression for Ben, and he's hopeful the gift will be felt for years to come.

"If my gift helps the program in any way, I am content," he says. "Knowing that the organization has future support coming from any donor allows it to plan for the future and not only work in a day–to–day manner."
